Since his debut in 2013, Ross Barton has been at the heart of some of Emmerdale’s biggest storylines. Over the years, viewers have been left on tenterhooks with Ross as actor Michael Parr beams into living rooms across the UK to confess his latest sins.
A Troubled Past
Ross was presented from the onset as troubled juvenile delinquent. He comes to the village as car-jacker and it is not long before he becomes embroiled in a series of controversies. His love life got increasingly complicated with things often turning to lust, jealousy and violence in relationships – particularly his on/off romance with village pin-up Debbie Dingle.
A Dark Side
One of the most memorable story arcs for Ross was his spiral to evilness and battle against mental health problems. Following a debilitating brain injury, Ross’ actions began to grow more and more questionable. He was paranoid, aggressive and self-destructive.
Redemption and Tragedy
In his darkest moments, however, Ross contends with self-loathing and regret. He being collected to address his mental issues and proceeded onward with life. Only his attempts, were regularly frustrated by other people and generally ravaging internal demons.
Regrettably, Ross passed away in 2019. His demise, after a brutal scuffle with brother Pete has stunned viewers and reverberated through the drama.
Legacy
So I think Ross Barton character is standing the test of time in Emmerdale history. His convoluted and often controversial storylines have helped to maintain the series’ popularity ever since. A popular character in the village and portrayed by actor Michael Parr, there was a hole left after his untimely death.
The legacy of Ross is to remind that the show also does not shy away from tackling hard and tender issues around mental health, domestic abuse or its aftermath.
